CAT JANICE - DANCE YOU OUTTA MY HEAD

Written by Kenzie Gay & Ania Hoefer

It should be a commonly known fact that music touches all of us. It brings people together and forms connections no matter the occasion; concerts, weddings, the list goes on. It poses as a legacy for everything it unifies and that’s a large aspect of the beauty to be found in such an artform. A tiktoker by the name of Cat Janice has been making and putting out original music since 2021, starting with her debut single titled ‘Graveyard Heart’. Over time, Janice has unfortunately been plagued with lung cancer and now, in early 2024, she is releasing her final song with hopes that the proceeds can leave something for her seven year old son once she is gone. Janice views this piece as her punctuating legacy; the ultimate goodbye that she’s named ‘Dance You Outta My Head.’

Dance You Outta My Head was gifted to the world on January 19th, 2024. Contrary to the heaviness of the situation and story behind the track, it is actually quite upbeat and fluid. With a distinct vibe found in the 1970s disco pop era similar to those of Boney M, Bee Gees, ABBA, and several more, Dance You Outta My Head is the sort of song that forbids listeners from sitting still. It is swanky in nature and derived straight from the soul because as we all know, the groove and boogie never dies.

Instrumentally, Dance You Outta My Head is refreshing compared to what we know about modern pop music. The originality steers the song through every bass line, every drum fill, and every singular note in a sophisticated yet funky way. It’s an extremely moving song when you take into account the situation Janice has been put in and the fact that she chose this piece; one of extreme life and spirit, to go out with. It would be a grand understatement to say that that is badass on all levels.

From a lyrical standpoint, Dance You Outta My Head could have so many meanings and that only builds onto the groovy mystery Janice has established. She sings “It’s a mess for the ages when you’re feeling a feeling inside. Dancing on the edge of disaster makes my heart beat faster and the feeling, the feeling ain’t right so I’ve gotta dance you outta my head” in the chorus. This could allude to her dark predicament or even something else entirely such as an addiction to what is commonly referred to as “the thrill”. The unknown plays a key role in the words of this song.

As described previously, this song is Cat Janice’s ultimate farewell to the world. She is going out, but not without making an impact and that is crystal clear from the first second of the track. It is vital to remember her for her life of incredible work as a musician, creator, and mother rather than the sickness she suffers from. Each and every stream for Dance You Outta My Head goes towards her son so he may have a plentiful life ahead. As writers, music enjoyers, creatives, and general human beings, we urge you to listen.
