WAKEY WAKEY - SLOE JACK

Fresh off of a North American tour with Joey Valence and Brae (JVB), up-and-coming Australian rapper Sloe Jack is starting the year right with his groundbreaking single “WAKEY WAKEY”. After hearing this song teased on the Punk Tactics Tour with JVB, I was more than excited to listen to this song again and watch the music video.

“WAKEY WAKEY” is a cathartic anthem that is a testament to the power of standing up for your dreams and chasing them no matter what.

One of my favorite lyrics from this single was, “I owe it all to the times they said I’d be six feet deep, sixteen sleeping out on the street and all the people wonder why I’m working all damn week.” These compelling lyrics bring light to Sloe Jack’s upbringing as a sixteen-year-old scraping by in the small town of Bendigo, Victoria. Not only does it reveal a part of his background, but the lyrics attest to Sloe Jack’s perseverance to pursue a career in the music industry.

The accompanying heavy bass rhythms and discernible delivery of the punchy lyrics harmonize with the feeling of perseverance. Much like Sloe Jack’s other songs, “WAKEY WAKEY” has an addictive bass line that repeats throughout the entire track. The sporadic alarm sound also adds to the brash feeling of waking up and jumpstarting the day. These repetitive sounds and Sloe Jack’s captivating voice are only some of the reasons why he’s on the rise.

Only one word can describe the visuals for this single: bold. While Sloe Jack only wore three outfits throughout the whole music video, his outfits maintained a clean, asymmetric look with bold pops of color. The most eye-catching look for me was the blue jewel-toned latex overalls paired with a white tank top. This striking outfit reflects the catharsis Sloe Jack commentates on in “WAKEY WAKEY”.

Undoubtedly, Sloe Jack is trailblazing in the rock-rap community and resonating with a spectrum of listeners. While there haven’t been any official announcements, Sloe Jack has teased on multiple Instagram lives and stories that another album is in the works. One thing is for sure and that is if “WAKEY WAKEY” should be anything to you, it should “be your new mother fucking theme song”.
