Lighthearted - Borrowed
Being a dynamic indie-folk band from Athens, Georgia, it’s made of identical twin sisters Gracie Huffman and Eliza Lemmon. Beginning in 2019, they take from folk and indie influences, while bringing their own style to the table.
With their release of “borrowed,” clocking in at 4 minutes, it tells us a story of time- and what we may do with it.
A cacophony of sounds fills our ears, a record scratching and skipping as the drums firmly establish their role in the unfolding song. The rhythmic beats resonate, setting the stage. Meanwhile, the guitar weaves its way through, ever so present. It invites people to lose themselves in its captivating rhythm.
There are many stories told through the mind and voices of Gracie and Eliza, but there are lines that just speak for themselves like…
“you are to me what the sun is to the sky”
“you are to me what the tide is to the shore”
Being with the person talked about provides a profound sense of self, meaning, and reliability, yet the underlying uncertainty and confusion of this weighs on their minds, causing them worry and doubt. It forces them to confront the reality that their time isn’t just borrowed; it’s a precious offering. However, in the presence of this person, they often feel like a burden, as if the time spent together is not something given but rather something that is being taken away from the other person.
Usually, you might feel regretful for giving time in someone who does not appreciate it, but this experience can also serve as a lesson. It encourages them to hold their heads high as they navigate through the complexities of the relationship and its challenges, allowing them to stride past the discomfort and the situation itself. By doing so, they send a slight message to the other person, making it known that the time spent together wasn’t a waste for them. Instead, it becomes a significant learning path, from which they can grow and move away from, carrying the knowledge with them into other relationships.
“I'm borrowing the present until it turns into the past”
“I borrowed you until you slipped out of my hands”
The significance of this and what it means is quite obvious—but it is also very important. Nothing in life is permanent; whether that be a situation or the pain that burrows in your heart, these experiences are temporary. They move away in time and teach you to cherish each precious moment before it passes.
With the song coming to an end, the lap-steel or slide guitar, maybe something that resembles it-gets louder as everything fades, skipping and fading once again. As the song approaches its cease, the sound of the lap steel or slide guitar—perhaps an instrument that closely resembles it—begins to swell in volume, filling the air with its resonant tones. Beginning to skip and fade, it leaves listeners suspended in a moment of reflection.
