PRIMAL MOON - TAKE OFF
At times, modern rock music reminds me of pop in the way that it all sounds very repetitive: the same vocal techniques, the same chord progressions, and the same general energy. It can be tiring to listen to when you’re used to the trailblazing work of past artists, but when that one band comes out of seemingly nowhere, it makes everything worth it.
Primal Moon is “your friendly neighborhood rock band” based out of Chicago, Illinois. To come from a place that is so rich in all aspects of culture, especially that of music (blues, baby!), a band has got to bring something new to the table. As someone who might as well be the Midwest's poster girl, I was very eager to give this somewhat-close group a listen though I had my worries. It has been a long time since I found a group that I can confidently say is destined to pave a new path of rock music, but Primal Moon evaporated all of my concerns from the opening notes of their newest single: Take Off.
From the ages of 11-16, I was as angsty as they come. Filled with teenaged rage and defiance, Take Off would have undoubtedly kick started my tenth grade heart. The piece is a work of intense grit pulled straight from a cinematic scene of vengeance; a Matthew Vaughn film if we’re playing specifics.
From the guitar work reminiscent of the fantastic Phil Campbell’s with a Billy Joe Armstrong edge to the plucky vocal style, Primal Moon is, pardon my french, fucking rock n’ roll to a T. Their small-time popularity is unproportionate to the genuine talent the five piece holds and it is with the utmost anticipation that I can hope this group makes their big break sooner rather than later because my god, The world needs it.
As of publishing, Primal Moon is preparing for their August 17th show at Chicago’s Cubby Bear and their September 8th gig at Plainfield’s Black Dog Vinyl. I can only dream that they play a show within my home state of Michigan down the road but for now, streaming to my heart’s content will suffice.
