WHAT WAS I MADE FOR - BILLIE EILISH
On July 13, pop-artist Billie Eilish released her new single What Was I Made For?, written and produced specifically for the highly-anticipated Barbie movie that is set to be released towards the end of this month.
Following director Greta Gerwig’s vision, the idea behind this hauntingly beautiful single was to add some background elements of somber intimacy during pivotal scenes in the movie, and anyone who is familiar with Billie’s work knows there couldn’t have been a better choice of artist to provide this sentiment.
In pure Billie fashion, What Was I Made For? starts off gentle and melancholy, allowing the listener to prepare for what’s to come. The vocals are soft with twinges of breathy, almost “exhausted” notes, like she’s longing for the awaited answer to her question. As the track goes on, the story and message of the song is made clear with keys of self reflectance and questioning of one’s own self worth.
The more you listen to the lyrics, the more you get pulled into your own relatability of wondering what purpose you have here, “Think I forgot / How to be happy / Something I’m not / But something I can be / Something I wait for / Something I’m made for / Something I’m made for.” Although promotional, “What Was I Made For?” remains deep and methodical, calling attention to your own feelings and makes you think about why you’re here on this earth too. Prepare to have your heart strings tugged and your mind racing (it’s what Billie does best.)
Along with this new release comes a music video that was directed by Billie herself. When talking about her new project, Billie took to Instagram to say, “To be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it. I’m so so thankful for that.”
