A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS - Adeline Hill
Adeline Hill, a singer and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia, has congregated a following of 200k on streaming platforms. An indie-pop figure, she has dropped "A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS," a concept album exploring imposter syndrome, breakups, love, existential questions, and faith.
Intrusive Thoughts
A song about…well, social anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Dealing with these issues is not out of the ordinary; many of us face them in how we live everyday, and this brings attention to them and makes others to feel noticed and understood. A commanding drum beat and an intriguing bass line breaks through the crescendo of a whooshing breeze, keeping us on course.
"Why does it feel like everyone’s in on the joke but me?" Communicates moments of self doubt, pressure and being in your own head about things. The intensity of the guitar and drums increases as it becomes louder and more complex, almost like listening to it through an old wall telephone.
Little Too Late
With a kick of a drum and a pluck of the guitar were let into the story of Little Too Late.
“I guess you imagined I'd wait by the phone, but I heard all I needed when you let me go.” A bit of regret of a mistake, maybe saying something they don’t mean in the moment. It’s as if this person didn’t recognize what they said, and expected them to wait around for them after letting this person go, yet comes back for more when there’s nothing left to give.
After You
A solemn and emotional piano melody gently introduces us to the captivating world of After You, setting the tone for a poignant piece that resonates with the audience.
“For the first time I'd be just fine, if nothing ever changed.” It tells us a story of a past relationship, one where love and admiration was present and adamant, which did stay around after things were through. Aside from the writing side of things, though the piano is still there, a beat kicks in, pushing us through the song as Adeline’s voice becomes echoed and intricately layered with other effects.
Nothing Else Matters
We’re met with a fresh and lively guitar strumming. Out of the album, this track stands out to me unlike any other. The guitar stands out, being the main attraction aside from the lyricism.
“The world can keep turning and I keep learning, that nothing else matters when it's me and you.” Is giving us a sense about how being with this person drowns out everything that doesn’t matter in that moment. No matter where, no matter what, this person brings them a sense of home and belonging. By the guitar making its leave and with a bit of humming and harmonizing, the track ceases.
Doesn’t Have To Be Like That
To leave us with all that this remarkable album has brought us, the track Doesn’t Have To Be Like That stands out as an upbeat and refreshing piece that captures the essence of it all.
“I think that I might be onto something, I think that I like who I'm becoming.” Going through all the various stages of feeling like an imposter, experiencing love, navigating relationships, enduring breakups, and confronting life itself, this song is about acceptance. It emphasizes the importance of realizing that the opinions of others regarding how they perceive you can often feel overwhelming. However, feeling as if you have to fit into this narrative that others create for you is not only illogical but also unimportant in the scheme of your own journey.
A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS is an exceptional album that captivates its listeners. It’s realistic in its portrayal of feelings, and it’s intricately put together with attention to detail. I have absolutely no complaints about it—every track is worth appreciating. Take a listen and experience the depth and diversity for yourself!
