Haley Heynderickx - Seed of a Seed

Born in Stockton, California, and raised in the town of Forest Grove, Oregon, we are introduced to Haley Heynderickx. Making her debut by releasing her first EP in 2016, followed by an album in 2018, and since then, Haley has accumulated quite a dedicated following of fans. Recalling the sound of 60’s and 70’s folk music, while also introducing details that evoke a jazz radio sort of feel is what binds together, Seed Of A Seed, an album released by Haley Heynderickx.

Gemini

This tells us a tale with Haley reciting the track about the figure of a woman who sits in a corner, declaring herself a past version of who they once were. This character embodies the struggle of recognizing and accepting facets of one’s identity, including past faults and misjudgments. As the song goes on, it encapsulates the process of embracing these parts of yourself, acknowledging the mistakes made along the way, and moving away from them in life.

While the song's introduction and plot gives ourselves a sense of a folk-outlaw sound, it grows from being tentative and undisturbed to then the drums kicking in and everything rushing in, creating a prospering and exuberant rest of the track.

Foxglove

Picture this…your head is hanging out of the vehicle window, the sun is beaming down on your face, and the gentle wind dances through your hair. The blades of grass and flowers sway as you make your way along the winding roads, leaving the bustling place behind you. The steady guitar serves as a grounding force, anchoring you in a space that feels both familiar and different.

It is a soundtrack for introspection, encouraging us to step back from our routines and appreciate the importance of our surroundings.

Redwoods (Anxious God)

To tell us a story, a pluck of a guitar and wind making its way through, it gives us a narrative that prepares us to hear what all this has to give us.

That man and bird had used to sing, well now the only man here’s cell phone ring, ring, rings.” Giving us a poignant truth and cry of realization that humans are falling out of touch with their surroundings, this sentiment tells of a time long before technology took stage in our lives. It invites us to reflect on the importance of surroundings and what we should feel for the abundant things it has to offer us.

Jerry’s Song

With a stir of an array of notes waltzing from the guitar, a cello or bass that lays as a backdrop and a voice that is different yet familiar all at once, we’re given Jerry’s Song.

Talking of being troubadours stuck in a rut, wondering how to make meaningful things while also being in an overcrowded and boisterous place, the struggle becomes palpable. Different voices join in at certain moments, creating another layer of depth and feeling in this place they’ve made. The guitar is alive and bright, providing a difference to the lyrics, which are both moving and touching.

With bits and pieces of singing and strumming, the track makes its way away from the audience.

In a few words, Seed Of A Seed reminds us of the things in life to take time for, like the act of waking up each day, stepping outside into the vast world, and taking in every moment you make. Make it a point to remind yourself to step outside once in a while, breathe in the air, and take a moment to listen to the album Seed Of A Seed.
