HALIE - WHISKEY GIRL

Singer songwriter, Halie is based in Nashville, TN which is so very fitting for her country music sound. She’s still a smaller artist, yet is making her rounds with her songs and slowly gaining more attention. My favorite is her recent one, “Whiskey Girl”.

This song, went from a simple joke but turned into a full blown single. According to HALIE,

“I was gifted a bottle of free Whiskey from a music festival.. I jokingly said before my session “i guess im a Whiskey Girl now” and then boom.. my cowriter said hey thats actually a cool idea. Then we picked around with some guitar chords and melodies.. then Whiskey Girl was born!”

I think this shows just how quickly music can adapt and arise from even the smallest situations. I decided to really dive into the song and look at the lyrics. This song is a story of falling for a guy and how whiskey seems to be the thing that it’s centered around.

I’m normally two glasses of red wine, saying goodbye to the girls, and home by midnight, but then I met this guy

This starts the song off nicely by establishing how she was before. How she used to be more tamed, would just go home, and wouldn’t stay up late; but of course, something or someone always comes along and changes things.

I don’t know Jack about Jim bean but I love how just one glass will have him talkin sweet. Can’t taste the difference, they all burn the same; but I love the way it makes him wanna stay up late”

Obviously when I said the song is centered around whiskey, I didn’t mean it totally literal. Yes the song talks about whiskey, but solely because it is the item that she connects with these memories. The good moments; all the sweet gestures, seem to be associated with the memory that he’s also a whiskey drinker.

A girl who used to solely drink wine, met a guy who introduced her to manhattans and seemed to flip her life upside down. I think it’s a feeling every girl can relate to; to learn and enjoy things that someone you’re crushing on also likes. Hence, the line “guess I’m a whiskey girl now”.

It, overall, has a very emotional aspect to it as well. With the light acoustic guitar at the start , to then adding the percussion at the chorus; it gives a very crescendo affect where hearing that resolution in the chorus helps arise the feelings she wants to convey in the song. I like how she kept the instrumental and tracking simple, because it really helps you to focus on WHAT she’s saying.

It’s a relatable topic that many girls can relate to, and I think that’s very fitting for the genre she’s fitting into. It gives very much a country-indie vibe but I think that’s something that is very rare yet needed! The heart of country music but with the lyricism of indie!

She has more songs currently out, so I highly suggest if you enjoyed this review, that you go check them out!

Check out her socials, and be sure to follow her to keep up with any upcoming shows or events!
