MCKENNA CARLSON - SHINE
McKenna Carlson was raised in Cape Cod but has decided to land her roots in Key West, FL.
I was curious to know more about her and so I took a dive into her website, where it says:
“She takes her experiences from all over the country and turns them into toe-tapping, heartfelt, multi genre songs that come from her soul. Her goal with writing and playing music, other than it being a great creative outlet for herself, is to reach the people who need it most. She hopes you’re able to find connection within her lyrics and that you enjoy listening”
Solely from this excerpt, you can tell she takes her music very seriously and FEELS every bit of it. That shows with her newest single, “Shine”.
“Try not to judge myself with the judgement from others rolling in. Cause I know that everything I do is too authentically me, for you”
It’s a very positive song, hearing these lyrics, it immediately takes me to a place of joy. While the lyrics also mention some battles, the inevitable ups and downs of life; the fact that she came to the conclusion that she is okay being herself, is beautiful. I think it’s something that many people need to hear and reflect on. It’s a relatable topic that I think many people could connect with her music; not only that but the indie vibe also gives it a very relaxing feel. The soft guitar and vocals helps the listener to focus on the meaning behind it but also still being able to sway and dance to it.
Another line that hit me specifically was
“Feel myself up with love , and then I go about my day and it dwindles down again”
This one hit particularly hard just thinking about some of my own experiences, but again, I respect that she seems willing to talk about a topic as difficult or taboo as self esteem. She’s willing to talk about the lows of feeling judged, or mocked or just not comfortable in your own skin. She gains my adoration and respect so much for having the guts to share that; not only exposing her feelings but also because it helps so many others feel seen; creates a feeling of community and welcomes those who may struggle with this.
This seems to speak specifically to those people even moreso, “I’m done snuffing out my light just so yours can shine brighter too”
No one should ever have to hide their true self from others, especially just to fit in. I love this line because it encourages being 100% authentically yourself and not worrying about others in that process. It’s easy for us to change how we act or what we say to fit in with others, but at the end of the day that’s not us; that’s not letting the best version of ourselves thrive.
Overall, a truly beautifully written song! I must say I am very excited to see what she does in the future! She’s a very very talented artist and I highly recommend sticking with her and seeing what more she releases! I have a feeling she will be one of those artists who soar because of their realness and vulnerability! She currently has 2 songs released, but be on the lookout for more!
