THE AUBREYS - RUNNING
In the industry of acting and the big screen, Finn Wolfhard is and has been a rising star since his role as Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things along with other parts in movies such as It (2017), The Addams Family (2019), The Goldfinch (2019), When You Finish Saving The World (2022), and several others. Albeit he is making waves in Hollywood, Wolfhard is also striving to do the same within another sector of art: music.
For a few years in his teens, the Canadian was a part of a band called Calpurnia. Aside from him, the group consisted of Malcolm Craig, Ayla Tesler-Mabe, and Jack Anderson, though the band ultimately deactivated in 2019 due to “things becoming too businessy” according to Wolfhard himself.
Fans were disappointed that Finn was no longer active in the music world but they had little to worry about because just a few months later, he would form a duo with former bandmate: Malcolm Craig.
The Aubreys were thus born and the two young musicians, aged just seventeen at the time, went on to release a plethora of singles along with an EP titled Soda & Pie before their debut 2021 album Karaoke Alone. During this time, Wolfhard’s acting career was really kicking up big time as he grew older while Craig focused on school but this didn’t stop the duo from putting out some refreshing music. On November 8th, the duo released Running. This is their second single this year, the prior being Kato.
Running, as specified by the band, was made with the help of Adam Thein, Heba Kadry, Isaac Boensch, Sean Ries, and Len. Opposed to their prior works (as mentioned above) this song has more of a “surf-rock” ambience similar to Sunroom, Peach Pit, and the mighty Surf Curse. It was really exhilarating to hear Wolfhard’s vocals on the track, as they have come a long way in my opinion. He’s quite literally finding his voice and the unorthodox approach is very pleasing to the ears. It almost reminds me of the great Jim Morrison from The Doors with his lower register and as we all know, I practically worship the ground Morrison walked on.
The inclusion of raw vocal takes were also a nice touch to Running. It’s always delightful to hear this in a song, as I believe it gives it a more personal addition that helps portray the emotion artists want to instill. With the combination of raw vocals and Wolfhards fresher take, the instrumentals were nothing short of phenomenal to wrap all of the song’s elements together cohesively. Craig’s work on drums always astounds me due to his tendency to push the boundaries of all that we know about percussion and that really comes to play here in such an intoxicating way.
After Wednesday’s release of Running, I’m sure The Aubreys have something up their sleeves; maybe an album, maybe a tour, or something else entirely. This young band is surely destined for bigger things and they’ll work their asses off to get to where they need to be, I have minimal doubts about that.
