NEPTUNE’S CORE - BOX / ANYWAY

Neptune’s Core is an alternative rock with indie persuasion band hailing from Chicago, Illinois. In late March, they released a double single featuring two new songs titled, “Box” and “Anyway”. Both of these songs carry similar messages told through a melancholy feeling. They really feed into the current craze of sad-girl music that people crave so much when they listen to artists like Phoebe Bridgers or Chappell Roan.

“Box” carries the bad-ass vibe that these young women bring to the Chicago music scene. Listening to this song is like playing Fiona Apple's album, When the Pawn… and listening to it all the way through. The band has stated that this is a new sound that they are hoping to achieve. Based on listening to their other works, this has without a doubt been achieved. “Box” is a very powerful song about finally letting go of someone. This is a topic that many of us know all too well. “Over again, never be all yours. Over again, never be all yours. Over again, never be all yours. Over again, never be all yours.” is repeated at the very end to bring the feeling of an emphasized message. This song is a great start to a double single and the possibility of a future album.

The next single “Anyway” has a more seldom sound to it. Lyrically, this song is a lot shorter in opposition to the other single, “Box”. This song is centered more around the breakup part of the breaking up process. “I can’t make you stay Nothing left to say, we both know it (we both know it) Our love fades more each day You want me anyway” is an intensely relatable lyric to anyone who has ever had their heart broken. This lyric itself is very similar to the hit song, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. It has this feeling of desperation and begging for someone to stay in your life even if you know it is no longer good or of use.

These songs are really good to listen to if you are currently going through some form of loss of a really important person in your life. Reading through the lyrics resembled a diary entry that someone would write to express their feelings. These songs express both sides that one might feel during a breakup, anger and sadness. The lyrics being accompanied with the beautiful instrumentals also makes for a very relaxing song that one could feel compelled to listen to on repeat.

Overall, Neptune’s Core has really made a statement with their last two singles. They are a group to look out for! They are bringing a new feminine sound to the alternative rock scene as well as keeping the feeling of an early 2000’s vibe. The band cites both “Smashing Pumpkins” and “Veruca Salt” as heavy inspiration for the sound that they carry. Due to all the inspirations as well as the strong messages they are sending at such a young age, Neptune’s Core has proven they are a cut above the rest.
